cultivate/restore/maintain: this master plan charts a course for the development and restoration of a 118-acre property in the lower Hudson Valley. The site, with vistas to the Shawangunk Mountains, was a former apple orchard that had been neglected for years and was over-run by poison ivy. The project restores healthy native plant communities in the stressed areas of the site and maps out maintenance regimes for the undisturbed and restored habitats. The property owners are working with architects to build a residence on site and the master plan helps to integrate the architecture with the many supporting landscape spaces on the property. The study explores how the large site can support many kinds of social and solitary activities: kitchen and house gardens, a secret garden for meditation, circuit loops through the property for exercise and wandering, a kickball field for parties, new gardens, meadow, wetland and pond restorations.
